There are two essential things in every painting:

Negative space: This is the background and the foreground area around the subject matter.
Positive space: This is the subject matter itself.

The negative space is often ignored in a painting, but if the two were given equal attention, the composition would look more balanced and pleasing to the eye.

When it comes to arranging the objects, it is a good idea to be aware of the negative space. Consider if it as having shapes as much as the objects. Negative shapes are the outlines of the background and foreground between the objects.
